What is work at height?

French labour law puts collective protection first: scaffolding, a platform or an aerial work platform with guardrails. Rope access only comes as a last resort, when these means are impossible or more dangerous, which is often the case on a rock face or a steep slope.

The choice depends on the site: an aerial platform when a machine can get close, scaffolding for long works on a wall, ropes on a cliff or above a drop. In every case, the area below is cordoned off and protected from falling objects.
